ALMOST 50% OF ATHLETIC TEAM MEMBERS SELECTED FROM OUTSIDE ARIZONA

Forty of 81 student athletes came from other states other than Arizona; only 1 athlete from Yavapai County

Yavapai Community College continues to highly recruit outside Arizona for its four athletic teams: baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball.  In 2019 there were a total of 81 athletes that made up the rosters.  Of that number, 40 were from states outside Arizona. (Data gathered May 2019.)

The Blog could find only one athlete recruited from Yavapai County on the team rosters.

The soccer team led the out-state recruiting effort and reported 15 of its 22 athletes coming from outside Arizona.  The softball roster reported that  12 of its 17 athletes were recruited from outside Arizona.  The baseball team recruited seven of its 25 athletes from outside Arizona and the Volleyball team has six of its 17 players were recruited from outside Arizona.

There has been criticism that the Community College has not recruited student athletes from the high schools in Yavapai County for its teams.  The data appears to support those critics.

SOCCER TEAM FINISHES IN THIRD PLACE IN NATIONAL FINALS

Community College athletic programs serving the West County emphasizes recruiting outside Yavapai County; Only two athletes from County on soccer team

The Yavapai Community College soccer team finished in third place at the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament held in Prescott Valley the second week in November. If the current roster is any indication, Yavapai coaches must believe their  success will come only if they recruit most of their athletes from outside Yavapai County .

President Wills commented at the November 2017 District Governing Board meeting that she sat beside a team member from Chino Valley. This comment suggested to some who knew little or nothing about the team that it was composed of local athletes. However, the team roster shows that only two of the 26 athletes are from Yavapai County.

The program ignores the east side of Yavapai County with no sporting events held there.  It also  fails to provide Yavapai County high school graduates with serious organized athletic opportunities at the Community College level because of its emphasis on outside-the-county recruiting.

The College boasts that in 29 years, it’s has compiled a 615-57-30 all-time record while capturing seventy-seven (77) conference, region, district and national titles. In 2017 Roughriders set a single season national scoring record with 145 goals shattering the old mark (134) that stood for 24 years.

The following is the 2017 roster. It shows where the student athletes recruited by the College came from.

FOUNDATION SAYS IT WILL GIVE $1.5 MILLION FOR SOCCER FIELD (rather than scholarships)

WILLS  MUST KEEP VERDE VALLEY UNDER CONTROL TO SWING THIS DEAL

The budget for the next five years for Yavapai Community College shows that the Yavapai Community College Foundation will pour $1.5 million into the completely unneeded multi-use field. The College propagandists will say it is for graduation and other outside events.

However, in fact, (who cares about facts)  the project is to build a soccer field and is in response to the soccer lobby coming from within and outside the College.

In order to pull off this waste of money project, (why use this easy money for scholarships or improving faculty salaries) President Penelope Wills must keep the Verde Valley under control. Thus, the press from her and her press office regarding the Sedona parking lot and a promise of over $3 million to renovate the Sedona Center will be repeated again and again.  And the idea of “possibly” setting up a culinary school will be heard repeatedly.

This is a part of the brutal political game Wills’ continues to play with the Verde Valley. Oh, the remaining $2 to $3  million or more for the multi-use field will be paid by the taxpayers in the County from their property taxes.

MULTI USE FIELD IN BUDGET SHOWING 1.5 MILL COMMITTEED

Yavapai College Soccer Clinics scheduled only on West side of the County

Historic athletic discrimination against the East part of the County continues

All of the athletic teams and athletic facilities for these teams are kept on the West side of the County.  Summer athletic programs for youngsters are likewise made available by the Community College only on the West side of the County.  Here, for example, is the announcement of the soccer clinic to be held in Prescott Valley.SOCCER 2
