COMMENCEMENT ON VERDE CAMPUS ENJOYED BY 110 GRADS

Mayor Tim Elinski thanks graduates for helping create a vibrant community and strengthening the local economy

Yavapai Community College announced in a press release that 110 graduates of the Sedona Center and Verde Campus attended commencement ceremonies last week. Earlier, the Blog had reported the number as 80.   The Community College news release follows in full:

Clarkdale AZ (May 13, 2019) – Commencement signaled the completion of one life-changing journey and the start of something new for more than 110 degree and certificate-earners sharing the Commencement spotlight Friday evening at the Yavapai College Verde Valley campus.

The ceremony’s keynote speaker, Cottonwood Mayor Tim Elinski, extolled the 2019 YC graduating class for helping create a vibrant community and strengthening the local economy. And, while he encouraged graduates to stay and build their lives in the Verde Valley, he urged them not to scrimp on adventures. “Please have as many adventures as you possibly can, but do consider coming back to the community that cares about you so much,” he said.

In her address to fellow graduates and a Mabery Pavilion overflowing with well-wishers, aspiring English teacher Shanandoah Sterling of Sedona, looked back on her own, much-delayed educational journey with fondness and mirth. She encouraged her classmates to continue dreaming and setting new goals. “Take the foundations of success gained here at Yavapai College into tomorrow, next week and the years to follow …  Wherever your journey takes you, be it onto a four-year university, embarking into a chosen career, outreaching into your community or striving to help others obtain their dreams, I know you will be successful.” Read More→

COMMUNITY COLLEGE RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING WORK OF FACULTY, STAFF AND ALUMNI AT “EVENING OF RECOGNITION CEREMONY APRIL 30 ON VERDE CAMPUS

Yavapai Community College honored outstanding faculty, staff and alumni at its “Evening of Recognition” ceremony held Tuesday, Aril 30 at the Verde Valley Campus.

Veteran math teacher Jim Bostwick was named outstanding faculty member. The announcement was met with a standing ovation. Dr. James Perey, executive dean of the Verde Valley Campus and Sedona Center, said of Bostwick, “Jim has always had the greater good in mind, with a firm philosophy in a student-centered approach to his work.”

Sedona Culinary Institute instructor Kat Biemann earned outstanding adjunct honors and Lori McIntyre, instructional assistant for the science department, was named outstanding staff member.

Earning Outstanding Alumni honors this year was Ron SauntmanRon attended Yavapai College where he received his Associate of Science in Fire Science in 2012. He went to Grand Canyon University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management in 2014 and an M.S. in Leadership and Disaster Preparedness in 2016. Her was awarded the Firefighter of the year in 2002 from Camp Verde Fire District and received two citations from the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors in 2017 for work done in Emergency Management during the Goodwin Fire.  The Yavapai County Emergency Services Manager, Perey said, “exemplifies the power of career and technical education and what it means to set lofty goals and achieve career excellence.” 

 

EAST REGION STUDENTS HONORED AT “EVENING OF RECOGNITION” CEREMONY

 Verde Valley Campus and Sedona Center students recognized for their achievements

Yavapai Community College leaders, faculty and staff honored students from the Verde Campus and Sedona Center at the “Evening of Recognition” ceremony held Tuesday, April 30 at the Verde Valley Campus. 

“The students recognized at this ceremony are some of the finest examples of students who have worked hard to distinguish themselves from others academically and through leadership and service,” Dr. Lisa Rhine said in her ceremony address. “I am excited to see what the future holds for these students who have made academic excellence, leadership and service to others a priority in the pursuit of their education.”

Rhine presented the President’s Award for Academic Excellence, to Shanandoah Sterling of Sedona. Earning the Vice President’s Award for Academic Excellence in 2019 was accounting student Nicole Earl of Cottonwood.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE CO-SPONSORING CONCERT APRIL 27 AT COTTONWOOD OLD TOWN CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Irish tenor of the year Emmet Cahill to perform at 7 p.m.

Yavapai Community College and the Cottonwood Old Town Center have joined together in bringing Emmet Cahill to Cottonwood for a one-night concert at Cottonwood’s Old Town Center for the Arts on April 27. The concert begins at 7 PM.

Emmet Cahill is the 26 year-old County Westmeath native who is described as having taken “the Emerald Isle by storm.” He was a musical prodigy at the age of five. He  trained at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, which named him its “Most Promising Young Singer” in 2010.

He is a  winner of multiple national singing competitions who has performed in Dublin’s National Concert Hall. He was named the Irish Music Association’s “Irish Tenor of the Year” in 2013.

Photographic Society to show works the second week of May

The Verde Valley Photographic Society will display its work at the Yavapai Community College Verde Valley Campus the second week of May. This will be the group’s first exhibit in 2019. The Campus is located at 601 W Black Hills Dr, Clarkdale, AZ 86324. The library is located in Building “M” on the Campus.

THE “WELL DRESSED WOLVES” GROUP TO PLAY MAY 2 FROM 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. AT MABERY PAVILION ON VERDE VALLEY CAMPUS

The Camp Verde Rock Group to play Neo-Classic Rock (A mix of Classic, Garage & Alternative rock); Admission is free

The “Well Dressed Wolves” contemporary Rock Band will help students celebrate the end of the school year with live music from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Mabery Pavilion on the Verde Valley Campus May 2.  The public is invited and admission is free.

The “Well Dressed Wolves” play what is described as Neo-Classic Rock. The three-person group’s home is Camp Verde.  Members include: Travis Eaton (Lead Guitar & Vocals);  Gabriel Rhodes (Drums & Vocals);  Louis Occhiline (Bass).   They began playing in Rhodes’ garage in the summer of 2004. They quickly found a chemistry that had been lacking in their previous bands. They were united by the influences of ’60s rock as well as the ’90s alternative.

“Travis Eaton, Guitarist and vocalist, began playing music around the age of four. Originally inspired by country music, he was exposed to rock ‘n’ roll after seeing a clip of the Beatles performing “All My Loving” on the Ed Sullivan Show. When he was ten, as a tribute to the Beatles, he began performing in a band called the Moptops as well as playing classical guitar in competition for the Verde Valley Music Association. Later he found himself playing with the band Recall alongside future band member Gabriel Rhodes. “

SECOND ANNUAL EMERGING WINEMAKERS COMPETITION AND SYMPOSIUM SATURDAY, APRIL 27

Event takes place on the Yavapai Community College Verde Valley Campus from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The second annual Emerging Winemakers Competition and Symposium will take place on Saturday, April 27th from 9:30 a.m. — 4:00 p.m. at Yavapai Community College’s Verde Valley Campus in Clarkdale.  Early Bird tickets are $30; $35 at the door.

The program for the day begins with a Keynote Presentation from Arizona Wine Pioneer, Eric Glomski, who is the owner of the Page Springs Cellars.  It will be followed by educational seminars that will be of interest to emerging winemakers and supporters of the Southwest Wine Center.

There will be award-winning Southwest Wine Center wines served in addition to live music, a great lunch prepared by Yavapai Community College Culinary students and an award ceremony.

VERDE CAMPUS TO HOST SERIES ON SEXUAL ASSAULT FROM NOON TO 4 PM WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3

Program to be held in room 137 of building M on the Verde campus; specialized material available from 10 AM to 2 PM in Maybery Pavilion

In an effort to raise awareness about sexual assault and its prevention and in conjunction with recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Yavapai Community College, Verde Valley Campus will host a series of speakers, presentations, resources and more on Wednesday, April 3.

The presentations begin at noon and will run to 4 PM in room 137 of building M on the Verde Valley Campus in Clarkdale. The event is free and open to students and community members.

Presenters include the Yavapai Community College Campus police, Verde Valley Sanctuary and the Southwest Indigenous Women’s Coalition. Several area resources, including Northern Arizona Care and Services After Assault and Mental Health Coalition Verde Valley, will have representatives, information and more in the Maybery Pavilion from 10 AM to 2 PM.

YAVAPAI COMMUNITY COLLEGE OFFERS WORKSHOPS TO HELP JOB SEEKERS

Two workshops scheduled; one on April 11 and a second on April 25

According to advertisements in the local newspapers, Yavapai Community College is offering workshops to help jobseekers in the County. The first is scheduled for Thursday, April 11, at 11 AM. The Community College indicates that this workshop will involve how to interview “with confidence.” For information as to place, contact Linda Brannock at Linda.Brannock@yc.edu or call 928-776-2170. She will have more information about this workshop.

The second workshop will be held Thursday, April 25, 11 AM. JAZZ BIG BANDS CONCERT IN COTTONWOOD MARCH 8 (FRIDAY) AT 7 PM AT OLD TOWN CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Tickets for the Yavapai Community College concert are $15 in advance, $18 at the door, and $20 for priority seating in the first three rows. Tickets are available online at showtix4u.com.

The Community College announced in a press release that there will be a  College Jazz Big Bands concert Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Old Town Center for the Arts in Cottonwood. The concert will “include the ‘Roughriders’ and the ‘Trailblazers,’ who will present a night of big band sounds that will send you back in time. Swing rhythms, soulful saxophones, and punchy brasses combine to make this an evening of classics that define the genre. Greats from across the ages will be performed.”

It also wrote in its press release that “The Roughriders are a music student-oriented big band, with a few of the most talented community members Prescott has to offer anchoring the lineup. With multiple music degree seeking students on the roster, the group is focused on the fundamentals of jazz as well as its historical background. For this upcoming concert, the band is specifically concentrating on the heart of the jazz tradition, the 12-bar blues progression, and its varied use in the jazz language. Selections include some of the most recognizable names in the jazz tradition, as well as some lesser known gems.

“The Trailblazers big band is an elite group of community musicians from all over the region, representing the best jazz for miles around. Among their backgrounds are several military musicians, school band directors, and other musical professionals of the highest caliber. The band was honored several years ago with a 1st place finish at the Reno Jazz Festival in Reno, Nevada. Their performance includes music from across the jazz spectrum, with much of their literature coming from the professional catalog.”

The Old Town Center for the Arts Is located at 5th Street & Main in Old Town Cottonwood.
