Millions in renovation and new construction; more on the way

The first phases of the 10 year plan is almost complete and much of the second phase is under way.  Here are a few photos taken from the District Governing Board agendas in the last couple of months showing how and where construction is occurring. $5 Million dollar new Art/Music Building on Prescott campus

Administrators recommend  $5 Million dollars to renovate Building #15 to house Art and Music on Prescott campus; Request illustrates impact of concentrated music program development on West side of County while ignoring East side of County

The Yavapai Community College administrators are asking the Governing Board to approve  $5 million dollars to construct  Art and Music facilities in Building #15 on the Prescott campus. The request appears in the draft capital improvement plan submitted to the Governing Board at its February, 2015  meeting.

Music notesThe $5 million dollar request is in part the culmination of a specific effort on the Prescott campus to develop music courses while ignoring music development in the Verde Valley. For example, by the fall of 2014 the Community College listed 87 separate courses of music instruction and 16 areas of music concentration that students might consider. However, of the 87 courses, 85 are taught only on the Prescott campus; two music courses existed at the Sedona Center for Arts and Technology campus. None appear online.UNDER CONSTRUCTION

In the spring, 2015 the College Registration catalog listed over 100 music courses being offered on the Prescott campus. It listed less than six on the Verde campus.

The Yavapai Community College Foundation has no doubt played a significant role in pushing for development of the facility with its Friends of Music Auxiliary. The Auxiliary has an outstanding membership made up mostly of Prescott and Prescott Valley residents. It has provided scholarship assistance to outstanding student musicians and co-sponsored musical events with the music department.

Supai Hall to be demolished; 10-year plan says new residence to be constructed

Supai Hall demolition on Prescott campus to be completed by the end of January; $6.75 million to build new facility

Supai hall 1As a part of the the ten-year plan, Supai Hall, which is located on the Prescott campus, is to be demolished.  After that, the first phase of the 10-year plan to be completed in its first three years calls for expending $6.75 million for a new residence hall on the Prescott campus.

College facilities report that demolition and site clearing is expected to be complete by
January 28. The chart below shows the anticipated projects and costs associated with them for the first phase of the ten-year $119 million development plan that was approved by a 4-1 vote of the Governing Board in December, 2013.   As you can see, there is almost nothing planned for the Verde Valley in this chart.  You can also see the “Residence Hall (apartment-style) facility planned for this period at a cost of about $6.75 million.

It was announced at the December Governing Board meeting that construction has begun on an elevator for the Performing Arts Center. Budget estimates for this project put the total cost at around $750,000 (see February 2014 proposed capital budget  in February, 2014 Governing Board agenda).  Over the last four years, the Community College has allocated an estimated $5 million dollars in upgrades to the Performing Arts Center on the Prescott campus. The facility is used almost entirely by Prescott and Prescott Valley residents. Most of the cost of the upgrades is being paid by Yavapai County taxpayers.

Ten year plan moving quickly ahead

Phase I of $119 million dollar 10 year Master Plan well underway on Prescott side of County

The Community College Facilities Management unit reports that Phase 1 of the 10 year $119 million dollar development plan, with 97% of development scheduled for the Prescott side of the County, is moving quickly ahead. McCarthy Building Companies was recently hired to serve as the construction manager for Phase 1 of the Campus Master Plan.

construction 1Representatives from McCarthy are at work with SmithGroup/JJR and the College, developing design documents for construction along with a phasing plan to address the continuation of services in Buildings 1 and 3 and CTEC while construction is underway.

Renovation of the first floor of Building 32 will begin in mid-October to develop space for the Institutional Effectiveness and Research (IER) department. Once the IER team is moved into Building 32, the bulk of the Business Office functions will be moved to Building 29 followed by the Dean of Computer Technologies and Instructional Support office suite moving to the first floor of Building 1. All of these moves will occur prior to the start of the renovations of Buildings 1 and 3, scheduled to begin on or about
December 15, 2014.
