Ten year plan moving quickly ahead

Phase I of $119 million dollar 10 year Master Plan well underway on Prescott side of County

The Community College Facilities Management unit reports that Phase 1 of the 10 year $119 million dollar development plan, with 97% of development scheduled for the Prescott side of the County, is moving quickly ahead. McCarthy Building Companies was recently hired to serve as the construction manager for Phase 1 of the Campus Master Plan.

construction 1Representatives from McCarthy are at work with SmithGroup/JJR and the College, developing design documents for construction along with a phasing plan to address the continuation of services in Buildings 1 and 3 and CTEC while construction is underway.

Renovation of the first floor of Building 32 will begin in mid-October to develop space for the Institutional Effectiveness and Research (IER) department. Once the IER team is moved into Building 32, the bulk of the Business Office functions will be moved to Building 29 followed by the Dean of Computer Technologies and Instructional Support office suite moving to the first floor of Building 1. All of these moves will occur prior to the start of the renovations of Buildings 1 and 3, scheduled to begin on or about
December 15, 2014.

Centerfield plaza for baseball park

Baseball Centerfield Plaza Project about done

One of the many building projects currently in some stage of development on the Prescott campus involves the centerfield bleachers at the baseball field.  The Community College Facilities department reports that work  is nearing completion to replace the existing concrete bleachers with a new plaza.  It also reports that the new plaza will be a combination of fixed and open seating for spectators to view the action from center field.

There are neither significant athletic programs nor athletic fields or facilities located outside the Prescott/Prescott Valley area.  The cost of this renovation was not available.

Student housing in Prescott; none in Verde Valley

Students on Prescott campus move into renovated housing; no similar housing planned for Verde Valley

The Yavapai Community College estimates that about 130 students will be living in the new Marapai residence hall dorm this semester. Another 90 students will be living in the Kachina residence, which was completely renovated last year. There are no student housing plans for the Verde Valley. The Board has refused to construct student housing anywhere outside Prescott.  This has been a major barrier to full development of the Verde campus in Clarkdale.  It is in part responsible for problems with supporting the Sedona Film School, which was closed by the College this year.

Taxpayer supported tennis court going up

A $1.3 million dollar tennis complex being built on the Prescott campus is said to be what “every community will want in the future

The Yavapai Community College tennis center complex going up on the Prescott campus was recently described by Prescott Daily Courier columnist Chris Howard  as consisting of “six post-tensioned concrete championship courts and a new stadium court — all with state-of-the-art lights, seating and viewing areas, 10 and under lines on the upper two courts, new and expanded tennis programs and no more crisis management.”  He wrote that “This facility will be what every community will want to have in their future.”

He also reported that the Prescott Area Tennis Association had raised nearly $200,000 for the complex and the City of Prescott will give $25,000 and repave the parking lot between the new tennis facility and the baseball complex at Roughrider Park at a cost of about $80,000.  County taxpayers will provide the remaining $1.1 million dollars of the estimated cost for the complex.  To read more, click here.

The construction of the tennis area continues the Prescott tradition of building all athletic facilities on the Prescott campus.  After more than 45 years, it has never constructed an athletic facility anywhere else in the County.
